What is ultrasonic technology?
An ultrasonic flow meter is a non-contact flow meter. Its working principle is as follows: the propagation speed of ultrasonic waves in a fluid is affected by the fluid's flow velocity. By measuring the propagation speed of the ultrasonic waves, the fluid velocity can be detected and the flow rate calculated. Taking a time-of-flight ultrasonic flow meter as an example, when ultrasonic waves propagate in a fluid, the propagation speed increases in the downstream direction and decreases in the upstream direction. That is, the same propagation distance has different propagation times. The flow velocity is then calculated by using the relationship between the difference in propagation speed and the measured fluid velocity. In other words, when an ultrasonic beam propagates between the "upstream sensor" and the "downstream sensor" in the direction of water flow in a pipe, the water flow causes a slight change in the propagation time of the ultrasonic beam relative to static propagation. This change in propagation time is proportional to the water flow velocity. This is the measurement principle of a time-of-flight ultrasonic flow meter. The theoretical expression for this relationship is as follows: V = MD/sin2θ × ΔT/TupTdown Where, M – the number of times the ultrasonic beam propagates in a straight line in the water; θ – the angle between the ultrasonic beam and the direction of water flow; Tup – the propagation time of the ultrasonic beam in the positive direction (propagation time from the upstream sensor to the downstream sensor); Tdown – the propagation time of the ultrasonic beam in the reverse direction (propagation time from the downstream sensor to the upstream sensor).
**High-Precision Metering** Ultrasonic water meters achieve high-precision flow measurement unaffected by fluctuations in water quality and pressure. Their range ratio (the ratio of the maximum to the minimum measuring range) can reach over 100:1, meaning even minute flow changes, such as dripping, can be accurately detected. This advantage allows water supply companies to reduce economic losses caused by leaks.
**Real-Time Monitoring and Early Warning** Ultrasonic water meters not only continuously monitor water usage but also provide real-time data on flow, pressure, and temperature. They continuously monitor and provide key data, enabling proactive maintenance and efficient operation through abnormal situation early warnings. Once any anomaly is detected, such as an abnormally high minimum flow rate at night, potentially indicating a hidden leak, or a sudden surge in water consumption, possibly indicating a pipe burst, the system will immediately send an alarm to the management platform and users, ensuring proactive early warning and efficient operation.
**Two-Way Metering, Comprehensive Functions** Another major highlight of ultrasonic water meters is their two-way metering function. Equipped with bidirectional metering capabilities, ultrasonic water meters are suitable for flow monitoring in various applications, performing exceptionally well in systems ranging from residential water use to industrial circulating water systems. They can measure flow not only in the normal flow direction but also accurately measure reverse flow. This is particularly important in situations where there is a risk of backflow, such as fire hydrants and industrial circulating water systems, enabling timely detection and response to anomalies.
Ultrasonic water meters have a wide range of applications, playing a crucial role in various settings, from residential and building meters for individual units and main meters to metering air conditioning cooling water, circulating water, and chemical liquids in industrial and commercial sectors, and even in precise metering for agricultural irrigation. Compared to traditional mechanical water meters, ultrasonic water meters represent not just a simple replacement but also a sign of technological advancement, marking a leap from the "mechanical age" to the "intelligent age."
